NCAHP Registration Regulations, 2026
What psychology students and aspiring professionals need to understand before treating a qualification as permission to practise.

The 2026 regulations create a formal registration framework. For students, the key point is simple: having a psychology degree is one important step, but it is not automatically the same as being registered to practise in a recognised professional role.
01 · Understand the framework
Registration is now described as a professional pathway
The regulations set out a framework that addresses recognised qualifications, professional registration, State and Central Registers, registration validity, renewal and continuing professional development (CPD).
They also make an important distinction: Clinical Psychologists who are eligible for registration with the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) are not covered by NCAHP registration. This means students should not assume one regulator or registration route applies to every psychology-related role.
02 · Separate the steps
A qualification and registration are different stages
The route is broadly: complete a recognised qualification, meet the applicable eligibility conditions, complete any required training or internship, apply for registration, and receive entry in the relevant State and Central Register with a UID and registration certificate.
The detail matters. The exact qualification, training requirement, scope and eligibility conditions can differ by profession. Before choosing a course or planning independent work, verify the pathway for the role you want—not just whether the word “psychology” appears in the course title.

Registration is not a one-time milestone
The regulations provide for five-year registration validity. They also set a minimum CPD requirement of 15 hours each year, totalling 75 hours across five years. No more than half of that CPD may be completed online.
Renewal is therefore part of professional responsibility, alongside keeping records and meeting the applicable requirements. Students can treat this as a reminder that professional development continues after a degree is completed.
04 · Know what to verify
Use the official source before making a career decision
Regulations can be detailed, updated and interpreted through the relevant authorities. This overview cannot determine whether a particular person, course or job is eligible for registration.
Before acting, read the official regulations, identify the professional category that applies, and confirm the current requirements with the appropriate authority or institution. This is especially important when a course provider makes broad claims about registration or practice eligibility.
